While something of an dramatised public service
announcement circa 1960, this movie turns out to be an
interesting tale of human relations and parochial mores with the
added benefit of compelling performances by actors young and
old. Peter Carter, the recently-appointed grade school principal
in a small Canadian town, along with wife Sally and little girl
Jean have settled beautifully into their new home and supportive
community. But their bucolic world is turned upside down when
daughter Jean innocently relates an episode that occurred with
her best friend Lucille and a revered community elder who asked
the two girls to take off their clothes. What ensues is a jumble
of conflicting emotional elements: morality, respect for the
status quo, concern for neighborhood children, retribution,
career, loyalty. Despite the movie ending rather expectedly,
some excellent dramatic scenes fill the gap.
